Genetic flaws can be deadly, especially when Kevin, at 13, discovers he has the same disease that killed his mother. All the while his father, a famous genetic scientist, secretly seeks a cure.
What Kevin, at 13, cannot know is how his seemingly emotionally distant father, who is almost never at home, is torn by the increasingly stressful demands of a project on the cusp of a scientific breakthrough along with his desperate effort to find the cure for his son before it’s too late.
Ever since that day seven years earlier, Dr. John Caldwell, head of a prestigious research lab, is desperately driven to unravel the genetic mystery that took his wife - keeping that knowledge secret from his son. What Kevin, at 13, cannot know is how his father’s research only steals valuable time away, widening the gulf between them.
Now on the last day of school, Kevin is about to discover something that happens to boys his age – a girl named Lizzy. The summer will be a trial of change from boyhood to manhood, all the while not knowing how or what really took his mother.
While living aboard his grandfather’s boat each summer, Kevin now finds comfort and safe haven from his inner struggle. By mid summer, Kevin and Lizzy’s friendship has bridged a gap, giving Kevin a connection that has long been missing. With the promise of growing up and the knowledge that one-day it could all be taken away, is much to bear. Even with all the summer activities on the bay with his friends, he decides to steal away to his father’s lab, hoping to find clues to what has been kept secret for so long.
One night, he returns to his grandfather’s boat, only to discover he has died, leaving Kevin devastated and in a world of uncertainty. Later that night, a sudden storm invades the peaceful harbor. On impulse, Kevin charges into the storm in his small boat, and disappears into the darkness. The next morning only broken remains of his boat are found. Fortunately Lizzy’s intuition leads his father to a small island called Raven’s Cove, where Kevin is finally found alive.
Even with nature’s tragic flaws, the promise of life still lies ahead for both father and son, a beginning instead of an end.
