While making a documentary film
in the jungles of Liberia with a small group of children and adults from
an American private school, Scheer was struck by the attentive curiosity
of the local villagers while the expedition’s mission was to engage a
foreign culture. For some, this was their first contact with any
caucasian.
Constantly eyed by villagers,
the young students, from 12 to 16, found themselves confronted with the
absence of burgers and fries and sometimes had many sleepless nights.
During this time, Scheer kept a photojournalistic record of this unique
excursion. The group tirelessly traveled on foot for over one hundred
miles over a three-week period, finally returning to their departure
point, Monrovia. This profound experience left everyone with an
indelible impression of people and places that will never be forgotten.
